Relax, folks!

False rumour! When you get those Certificates, you get them FOR LIFE.
University of Cambridge ESOL confirms that

  1. Yes...BUT: Look at your Certificate. It has got the date on it. Somebody might say: "OK, you could speak English twenty years ago. So what? Can you NOW?" The point is that you DO forget languages. Try speaking in Basque to some grandmothers and grandfathers who couldn't speak Spanish when they were children. I think that is what the rumour is about.
However, I would never delay taking these exams for this reason. Hopefully, you will continue your contact with the language at University in a way that could reassure anybody you haven't lost your level.

  2. There is a reason to that rumour: the IELTS exams. IELTS is the International English Language Testing System. It was one of the pioneers of four skills English language testing over 21 years ago, and continues today. IELTS is formed by British Council, IELTS Australia and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL) through more than 500 locations in 130 countries. It has been used as a reliable indicator of true-to-life ability to communicate in English for education, immigration and professional accreditation.
Nowadays, many institutions, universities, companies are asking this test to check that the person, in fact, is able to communicate in English. The IELTS test score is valid for 2 years. Then, you have to take it again.
